What is oud?

Oud is also known as oudh, agarwood or eaglewood. It refers to the dark fragrant wood formed when certain trees from the Aquilaria or Gyrinops genera produce resin. A richly scented oil can be distilled from resinous agarwood. In perfume, the oud note may come from natural oud oil or a recreated fragrance accord. The note pyramid alone does not show which form has been used.

What does oud smell like in perfume?

Oud can smell woody, resinous, smoky and balsamic. Some styles lean towards leather, earth or dry woods, while others feel warm, gently sweet or almost velvety. An oud perfume is therefore not automatically heavy or very dark. The surrounding notes determine which part of its character comes forward.

Why does oud smell so different from one perfume to another?

Origin, processing and the fragrance structure all affect the result. Oud's position in the note pyramid matters too. In the top, it may appear early and distinctly. In the heart, it can deepen flowers, spices or leather. In the base, it often blends with amber, musk, vanilla, resins or woods and shapes the later development.

Which notes work well with oud?

Oud can move in many directions. Rose and other flowers soften its drier side and create a smoother floral contrast. Saffron, cinnamon, cardamom or pepper bring out the spice. Amber, vanilla and tonka bean add warmth, while leather, tobacco and darker woods emphasise its bolder character.

Which oud perfume suits you?

If you are trying oud for the first time, begin with supporting notes you already enjoy. Rose, vanilla or musk often lead towards a softer style. Leather, tobacco, smoke and spices are better signposts when you want something bold and dark. For more freshness, look for bergamot, lemon, herbs or green notes. This makes it easier to find an oud scent that fits your taste.

Perfume oil or eau de parfum?

Perfume oil is applied sparingly to specific points on the skin and gives you precise control over the amount. Eau de parfum is sprayed and spreads more widely during application. The better format mainly depends on how you like to use fragrance. Oud itself can feel soft, spicy, smoky or dark in either form.

Smell it again after a few minutes

The opening does not tell you everything about a fragrance. Oud can change noticeably as flowers, spices, woods or sweeter notes become clearer. Read the full note pyramid before choosing and give the perfume some time on your skin. This helps you decide whether you enjoy only the opening or the later development as well.
