Lattafa Asad Zanzibar – Eau de Parfum with Coconut Water, Salt and Vanilla
- Top note: Black pepper, lavender
- Heart note: Coconut water, salt, iris
- Base note: Vanilla, incense
Salt air over coconut water, vanilla as the floor. A men's fragrance that smells of coastline.
Pepper and lavender at the start
The opening is dry and herbal. Black pepper brings a fine heat and lavender sets its clean, faintly camphorous freshness beside it.
The pairing reads sober and orderly and prepares the way for something warmer. Smelling the Zanzibar version for the first time, you would not yet expect a coastal fragrance from this entry.
Coconut water and salt in the heart
Here the character changes. Coconut water smells clear and milky at once, far from the sweet coconut flake familiar from sun cream. It is the thin, cool version of the fruit.
The salt beside it is the real trick. It brings a mineral freshness reminiscent of skin after a day by the sea. Iris lays a powdery layer over them and links both to the base.
Vanilla and incense
The base brings vanilla and incense together. The vanilla is creamy and soft and picks up the milkiness of the coconut water.
The incense sets a dry, lightly resinous depth against it and stops the sweetness taking over. What remains is a warm, salty ground tone that works on the skin for hours.
The right setting
Asad Zanzibar works all year but is at its best in spring and summer. Warmth brings the salt and coconut water forward most clearly.
It suits the day as much as the evening, holidays, outdoor meetings and occasions that call for something light.
How it differs from Asad
Asad and Asad Zanzibar share only the name. The original Asad is dark and resinous, with pineapple, coffee and amber. Zanzibar goes the opposite way: bright, salty, with a creamy base.
Liking one therefore does not mean liking the other. It is worth considering them separately. Zanzibar is by far the more summery and lighter of the two compositions.
Lattafa Perfumes was founded in Dubai in 1980 and has made the Asad line one of the best known in its range. The bottle holds 100 ml and is kept in pale blue tones.
How it behaves on skin
For the first half hour pepper and lavender lead, then the heart takes over. Coconut water and salt need warmth, so the fragrance reads considerably fuller on warm skin than on cool.
From the third hour the vanilla moves forward and makes the close creamy. The incense stays recognisable underneath and keeps the sweetness dry. On clothing this part holds longest.
Testing it for the first time, give it two hours. The path from the herbal top through the salty heart to the vanilla base is where the interest lies, and it only shows fully after the second phase.
How to wear it
Apply to neck and wrist, and add some to clothing for the evening. On textile the vanilla base in particular holds, showing its creamy side most clearly there.
Let it dry down after application and avoid rubbing it in. Store the bottle away from light at room temperature so the salty freshness is preserved.
