Lattafa Blue Oud – Eau de Parfum with Cambodian Oudh, Saffron and Sandalwood
- Top note: Cambodian oudh, black pepper, apple, bergamot
- Heart note: Fruits, jasmine, musk, sage, saffron
- Base note: Ambergris, sandalwood, oudh, guaiac wood
Oudh from the first moment, with apple and pepper. A dark fragrance with a bright tip.
Oudh right at the opening
Blue Oud puts the oudh up front, which is unusual. Cambodian oudh is regarded as the softer, sweeter version of the material, with less of the sharp note found in other origins.
Beside it stand black pepper, apple and bergamot. The fruit and citrus give the dark wood a bright tip and the pepper a dry heat. This contrast defines the first half hour.
Saffron and jasmine in the heart
Saffron is the defining material of the middle. It smells dry and spicy with a leathery facet and has always paired well with oudh.
Jasmine adds a creamy blossom, sage a herbal freshness, and musk holds it all softly together. Further fruits echo on from the opening. In this phase the fragrance turns fuller and rounder.
Ambergris, sandalwood and guaiac
The base gathers four materials that all work in the same direction. Ambergris gives salty, mineral warmth and sandalwood creamy mildness.
The oudh returns and is joined by guaiac wood, which smells smoky and lightly tarry. What remains is a warm, woody ground tone with depth that works on the skin for many hours.
The right setting
Blue Oud belongs to the cold season and the evening. Cool air carries oudh and saffron particularly well, and in heated rooms the base opens up fast.
For celebrations, invitations and Friday prayer. In summer and at the office go sparingly, as it fills a room quickly. To wear it during the day, keep it to a single spot.
What makes Cambodian oudh different
Not all oudh is the same. Origin strongly determines character. Cambodian oudh is regarded as the softer, sweeter version, with a resinous warmth and less of the medicinal sharpness of other types.
That is exactly why Blue Oud also works for anyone who has struggled with oudh so far. The material stands at the centre here but is embedded in fruit, saffron and sandalwood.
Lattafa Perfumes was founded in Dubai in 1980 and made oudh compositions like this one known in Europe. The bottle holds 100 ml and carries a blue presentation with gold accents.
How it behaves on skin
The first half hour is the strongest. Oudh and pepper sit right at the front, with apple and bergamot adding a bright edge that fades quickly.
From the first hour the saffron takes over. It joins the oudh in that classic oriental pairing which carries the fragrance. Jasmine and musk make this phase softer.
From the third hour the base remains. Sandalwood and ambergris move closer to the skin and the guaiac wood gives a smoky depth beneath. Testing Blue Oud for the first time, give it three hours.
How to wear it
It projects widely, so go sparingly. Neck and wrist are enough for most occasions.
Blue Oud holds particularly long on clothing. Store the bottle away from light at room temperature so oudh and ambergris keep their depth.
