Varnell by Sultan Essancy – Unisex Eau de Parfum
Top notes: saffron, lavender, bergamot, cypress, nutmeg, cardamom, styrax, cinnamon, grapefruit, apple, artemisia
Heart notes: oud, geranium, tobacco, cedarwood, cypress, labdanum, floral notes, cashmeran, lily of the valley, jasmine
Base notes: leather, patchouli, oud, guaiac wood, sandalwood, amber
Varnell has one of the broadest pyramids in this batch. Saffron, lavender, bergamot, cypress, nutmeg, cardamom, styrax, cinnamon, grapefruit, apple, and artemisia build the opening before oud, tobacco, woods, florals, leather, patchouli, sandalwood, and amber add depth.
Despite that long list, the fragrance has a clear direction. Aromatic freshness and warm spice dominate above, oud and tobacco deepen the center, and leather with woods shapes the base. The overall effect is unisex with a distinctly masculine lean.
Saffron and lavender set the opening
Saffron gives the top warm dryness, while lavender introduces a clean aromatic line. Bergamot and grapefruit add citrus brightness, and apple brings a crisp fruit accent. These notes prevent the opening from feeling heavy even with several darker spices around them.
Cypress and artemisia contribute a green, slightly austere edge. Nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon add different forms of warmth, while styrax gives the top a subtle resinous depth. The first stage is therefore complex, but its aromatic-spicy focus remains easy to recognize.
The citrus and apple notes are important because they provide lift inside a dense opening. Without them, saffron, spice, styrax, cypress, and artemisia could feel much darker. Their brightness gives Varnell room to develop gradually rather than revealing all its weight immediately.
Oud and geranium shape the heart
Oud becomes a major anchor in the heart. Tobacco adds dry warmth, cedarwood and cypress reinforce the woody structure, and labdanum contributes resinous depth. Geranium, lily of the valley, jasmine, and general floral notes keep the center from becoming uniformly dark.
The floral materials are used as contrast rather than as the main theme. Jasmine and lily of the valley open small pockets of brightness around oud and tobacco, while geranium adds an aromatic floral quality. Cashmeran softens the woodiness and makes the heart feel more layered.
Tobacco and oud form the darker core of the middle. Cedarwood and cypress extend that dry structure, while labdanum adds warmth. This combination makes the heart feel deeper than the top without abandoning the aromatic and spicy character introduced by lavender and saffron.
Leather and patchouli carry the base
The base brings leather, patchouli, oud, guaiac wood, sandalwood, and amber together. Leather supplies a dry tactile quality, patchouli adds earthy depth, and oud remains the thread connecting heart and base. Guaiac and sandalwood broaden the woody texture.
Sandalwood softens the lower structure and gives amber a warmer surface to rest on. Guaiac wood adds another darker wood tone, while patchouli prevents the finish from becoming too polished. The base feels rich, but it retains clear dry edges.
Leather is one of the strongest signals behind Varnell's masculine lean. Against sandalwood and amber it feels less severe, yet it still gives the final stage a pronounced character. Oud and patchouli reinforce that depth without erasing the aromatic freshness remembered from the top.
How Varnell changes from top to base
The development is best understood in broad movements rather than individual ingredients: aromatic citrus and spice, then oud-tobacco woods with floral relief, and finally leather, patchouli, oud, and warm woods. That organization keeps a very large pyramid readable.
Varnell is aromatic, spicy, woody, leathery, resinous, and oriental in character. Freshness exists in lavender, citrus, apple, cypress, and artemisia, but the later stages move decisively toward depth. The contrast gives the fragrance its strong presence on paper.
The fragrance signature of Varnell
Its unisex classification remains plausible because saffron, florals, amber, and sandalwood soften the darker materials, but the balance leans masculine through tobacco, leather, oud, patchouli, cypress, and dry woods. Both sides remain visible throughout the progression.
Varnell by Sultan Essancy begins with a wide aromatic-spicy opening, deepens through oud, tobacco, woods, labdanum, and florals, then settles into leather, patchouli, oud, guaiac wood, sandalwood, and amber. Its identity comes from density organized around a clear woody core.
